The World of Lifespan Learning
Religious Exploration Curriculum and Classes

A place where kids like to be and have their sprits grow.

Each Religious Exploration class has a complete curriculum and a teaching team to work with the children on their spiritual and faith development.

See the R.E. Prospectus for more details.

NURSERY

(any age; no leaders, but a registration record is kept for office use)
Our Lounge near Worship Hall is equipped with closed circuit TV for parents who would like to listen to the service while attending to the needs of little ones who are too restless to stay in the service.

FIRST STEPS

Toddlers to Two Year Olds
Little people meet in a large room with blocks, equipment for dramatic play and climbing, music, simple crafts, stories, and caring adults. First Steps is a happy and safe atmosphere for connecting and growth. This group will be cared for by a team of four leaders along with parent volunteers.

CELEBRATING ME AND MY WORLD

Three and Four Year Olds
In our Unitarian Universalist communities, we seek to provide children with experience and opportunities to grow in their sense of trust and caring, to develop their self-identity, to deepen their sense of oneness with all life. This U*U curriculum celebrates the wondrous qualities of children and expands outward to the things and people around them.

RAINBOW FAMILY

Five to Nine Year Olds
Our 5 to 9 year old groups gather each Sunday morning as the Rainbow Family. This year, we are sharing the stories of Spirit Play, a U*U R.E. program which presents stories reflective of our faith. Stories are told in a large group using concrete materials, followed by small group experiences of wondering and art response. Our Blue group (7-9 year olds) takes their explorations outdoors after the story telling.

  • Red (5 year olds)
  • Orange (6 year olds)
  • Yellow (7 to 9 year olds)
  • Green (7 to 9 year olds)
  • Blue (7 to 9 year olds ~ outdoor option)

When you register to take part in this experience, simply indicate Rainbow Family as your program choice (please specify Blue if your child would like to participate in the outdoor option).

MULTI-AGE MODULES

Five to Nine Year Olds

Outdoor and Music

In this five week session from November 4th to December 2nd, children will be invited to choose participation in either the Outdoor or the Music module. Outdoor participants will explore our campus and the riverside with a team of adventurous volunteer leaders, while the Music group works with a guest instructor funded by the proceeds of an event in our concert series.

Our Whole Lives (OWL)for Grade One will be offered to 6 year olds in an eight week session beginning in January 2008. We also invite any 7 year olds who have not yet participated in this program to join us.

HOLIDAYS AND HOLY DAYS

Ten Year Olds
The festivities of holidays tell a story which children absorb with delight, through experiences far more than through words. A holiday is not something to talk about: it’s something to do! Some of our 10 year olds participated in Holidays and Holy Days when they were 8. Keeping this in mind, we will tailor our curriculum to include new sessions and to fit with the group’s participation in Grade 5 Our Whole Lives (OWL) from January to April 2008.

NEIGHBORING FAITHS

Eleven Year Olds
In keeping with all of the U*U Principles, especially the free and responsible search for truth and meaning, this program actively engages young people in exploring the religious traditions in their community. Neighboring Faiths not only introduces participants to the faith traditions and practices of other religious groups in the community but also includes field trips to local places of worship.

COMING OF AGE

Twelve Year Olds
This program honours the transition from childhood to youth, marking this human passage with rituals, learning, testing, and celebration. A commitment to regular attendance is important to meaningful participation in this engaging and dynamic experience which culminates in a special Coming of Age worship service in the Spring.

OUR WHOLE LIVES (OWL)

Thirteen and Fourteen Year Olds
Recognizing and affirming that humans are spirit, mind, and body together, this curriculum gives clear and accurate information about human sexuality. It helps young people to develop communication and decision-making skills, as well as self-confidence and values in relation to this very important area of life.

Registration for this group entails a firm commitment to attending all 31 weeks of OWL.

YOUNG RELIGIOUS UNITARIAN UNIVERSALISTS

Grades 9-13
The Youth Group works with adult advisors to plan programs which include personal sharing, discussion of religious and ethical issues, guest speakers from other religions and from the community, service projects, participation in district youth conferences, and worship. All youths are encouraged to participate in all congregational activities.

This year we will offer Senior High Our Whole Lives (OWL) for YRUU in two weekend workshops: November 9-11, 2007 and February 8-10, 2008.

Worship with the adults is a regular experience for all children.
Go to "Between Sundays," a service of the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Larger Fellowship to help parents answer children's questions during the week.
The Unitarian Universalist Church of the Larger Fellowship has a site to help parents in answering mid-week questions by their kids!
If you would like further information, you are encouraged to e-mail the Director of Religious Exploration, Susan McEwen or contact the office.
