Theology is one of the most commonly asked-about aspects of Unitarian Universalism. If you've been participating in congregational life for a while you've no doubt noticed this. The hardest part is that we don't have a single answer. People are often disappointed and excited by this, often at the same time. As you probably noticed in the world religions (LINK) section, there are a lot of theologies out there. Here are a few basic definitions: atheism: belief that there is not a god non-theism: not believing in god agnosticism: believing that the truth about the existence of a god or gods is unknowable OR being undecided about one's belief in god, or both monotheism: believing in one god polytheism: believing in many gods pantheism: believing that god or some kind of holiness is pervasive throughout the world OR believing that all gods are to be worshipped. naturalistic atheism or theism: believing that there is spiritual authority in nature. unitarianism: believing that god is one entity trinitarianism: believing that god is three-in-one For many people, denominational theology is central to their religious identity. For some Unitarian Universalists, personal theology is central to religious identity. For others, it's not. Confused by the alphabet soup? Try the glossary
