History is perhaps one of the best documented parts of Unitarian Universalism. There are a number of different views of what happened when and how and who was responsible. The very short outline is this: Unitarianism and Universalism trace their roots to a number of religious thinkers starting with the pre-Christian Jewish traditions. The markers get clearer and more familiar moving forward through time, until Unitarianism and Universalism emerged as clear Protestant faith traditions in the 1700's, mostly in Europe and North America but also in other locations. In 1899 they had their first conversation about merging the two; in 1961 in the United States the American Unitarian Association and the Universalist Church of America joined to form the Unitarian Universalist Association. The UUA included an organisation called the Canadian Unitarian Council until (2000?) when the CUC branched off into greater independence.
